Gimsing - Handbjerg
Marginal moraine from rethrust with connection to inner depression
The site covers an area of approximately 2x5 km, located east of Struer, immediately south of Venø Bay.
The site is located in the moraine landscape that forms the northern part of the geopark's land area, and which was formed in connection with the Main Thrust glacier thrust and melting. To the north, the site is bounded by Venø Bay, which is interpreted as an inner depression formed during rethrusting from the Main Thrust glacier.
The site consists of a distinct hill range that rises evenly over a distance of about 2 km from Venø Bay and up to 57 m above sea level in the easternmost part at Handbjerg. Further west, the hill range curves slightly to the north and becomes lower with heights of up to 34 m above sea level. The soil in the hill range and its flanks consists predominantly of moraine clay, and there are no drainless depressions or other of the usual signs of melting dead ice.
The hill ridge is interpreted as a marginal moraine and is thus part of the series of marginal moraines formed by rethrust from the Main Thrust glacier, such as Bonnet , Nr. Lem-Nr. Nissum-Kamstrup , Bjerrumbuen , Toftum Bjerge , Breinholtbuen , Ryde-Sevel .
General protections include Section 3 of the Nature Conservation Act (protected habitats) and the beach protection line. The area's churches and burial mounds are protected.
