Venø Bay
Indentation from rethrust at the Main Thrust's remelting
The site encompasses a water area of approximately 9x9 km at the bottom of Venø Bay east of Struer and 8-10 km north of the Main Stationary Line. The site is thus part of the landscape that covers the northern part of the geopark, and which was formed in connection with the advance of the Main Thrust from the north and northeast to the Main Stationary Line and the subsequent melting.
The seabed in Venø Bugt is today quite flat with an average water depth of around 6 meters. Lower areas are found in the western part of the bay around the island of Venø and in the eastern part at the outlet from Sønder Lem Vig – Geddal Enge .
To the south and west, the site is bounded by marginal moraines formed by rethrusting during the melting of the Main Thrust Glacier, Gimsing - Handbjerg and Breinholtbuen . In the southern part of the site, the two tunnel valleys Kilen - Hornet in the west and Hellegård tunnel valley in the east originate. To the east, the site is bounded by a complex area with moraine landscapes and meltwater deposits linked to the large Karup Valley, which includes Stubbergård Sø - Søndersø.
The postglacial development is described under the nearby Venø – Nørskov Vig .
General protections include, in particular, Section 3 of the Nature Conservation Act (protected habitats) in coastal areas and the beach protection line.
