Skibsted Fjord - Kås Bredning

The coastal landscapes of the Limfjord represent a great variety in coastal types and shapes.

Skibsted Fjord – Kås Bredning is a coastal area. Skibsted Fjord is located on the north coast of Thyholm, and Kås Bredning on the north and east coast of Jegindø. The geological value of the location is due to the great variety of coastal types and shapes found within a relatively small area.

The coast at Skibsted Fjord – Kås Bredning represents all the coastal types found in the Limfjord, and virtually all the coastal types found in Denmark. Here, everything from dynamic equalizing coasts and cliff coasts to calm salt meadow coasts can be found. In addition, there are several characteristic coastal forms such as headlands (retodd, krudd), angled forelands, drags (tombolos), tongs, beach walls and beach lakes. The coast is also characterized by containing countless bays and inlets, as well as several islets and islands. Like the sites Veserne-Plet-Engbjerg and Hellerød Kær, the landscape is characterized by the significant sea level changes that characterize the period after the melting of the Weichsel ice.

Skibsted Fjord – Kås Bredning is particularly valuable biologically due to the large areas of salt marsh and shallow sea, which constitute a feeding ground for many bird species and seals. In addition, the area is relatively undeveloped and undisturbed by human intervention. The area has been designated as a Natura 2000 Habitat and Bird Protection Area. The area is also a nature/game reserve, and Skibsted Fjord is covered by a conservation area. Finally, the area is included in NK 87 Kås Bredning – Skibsted Fjord.
