Møborg Bakkeø
Hill island with profile in gravel pit and with Møborg Church beautifully placed
Møborg Bakkeø is a small hill island located near the village of Møborg south of Lemvig and west of Holstebro.
In the geopark there are several hill islands (see e.g. Sønder Vosborg Hede , Burlund and Idom Å and Ormstrup Hede ) ranging from the huge Skovbjerg Bakkeø to relatively small ones such as Linde Bakkeø and Fjaltring Bakkeø.
Møborg Bakkeø is geologically interesting as it constitutes a geographically delimited and very illustrative example of the hill island landscape type. In addition, the site contains a gravel pit profile that shows the internal structure of the hill island.
Hill islands are moraine landscapes from the penultimate ice age (Saale). They are a characteristic landscape element in many places in West Jutland south of the main ice age, where they rise above the meltwater plains of the Weichsel ice age. Several places on the hill island offer magnificent views of the surrounding landscape. Møborg Bavnehøj , whose highest point is 45 m above sea level, has, as the name suggests, previously been used as a bavnehøj. On the bavnehøj, the residents of the time used to light fires, "bavner", to warn of invading enemies.
At Møborg gravel pit there is a natural campsite with a shelter hut and a marked hiking and cycling route. There are many burial mounds on the hill island, and Møborg Church is built on the hill island so that it can be seen from a long distance.
