Hellerød Kær
Hellerød Kær is a low-lying bog area with adjacent distinctive valleys, located near Tambohuse on the east coast of Thyholm.
The area is a marine foreland, and the valleys are probably late glacial erosional valleys with raised and overgrown seabeds and extremely rich limestone bogs.
Hellerød Kær is a unique example of the very rare habitat type called an extreme rich kær. Hellerød Kær has been a shallow fjord/cove in the Littorina Sea, probably with widespread mussel beds and a large occurrence of sea snails and the like, and the area has probably been home to large populations of foraging birds. These conditions have led to the deposition of lime mud in the fjord/cove.
The occurrence of lime mud means that the flowing groundwater is extremely calcareous, and the marsh is home to a great wealth of plant species that are adapted to the special conditions, including rare wild orchids and carnivorous plants. Hellerød Kær is bounded on three sides by glacial hills. Similar valley systems are found, for example, in Trælborgdalen and Klosterheden .
