Sevel Limestone quarry

Disused lime pit and ruins of lime kilns

Sevel Lime Pit and Lime Works are located a few hundred meters north of the Holstebro-Viborg main road at Bjergby. It is a large, disused lime pit, where there are several ruins of smaller lime kilns and a larger ring kiln. The site includes the lime pit itself and the adjacent lime works area with the kilns.

The limestone at the site lies high in the soil layers, just like at the two other limestone pits , Bjørndal Limestone Pit and Hjerm Limestone Pit . This is because the Danien Limestone has been pushed up onto a smaller area in the northeastern part of the salt structure area.

The limestone quarry is located immediately outside the Main Stationary Line, where the area was first covered by meltwater sand and gravel from the Sønderhede meltwater cone and subsequently by sand and gravel from the Karup and Hjelm Hede meltwater plain, which cut into the Sønderhede Plain in the phase where the meltwater from Dollerup/Skelhøje found its way north to Venø Bugt.

Furthermore, the limestone pit is located immediately outside the mouth of the Stubbergård Sø - Flynder Sø tunnel valley, but the meltwater cone from here has been eroded by the Karup River and replaced by meltwater deposits from it.
