Veserne - Plet - Engbjerg

Raised seabed, Stone Age Sea. Littorina Slope

Veserne-Plet-Engbjerg is a flat, low-lying area northwest of Lemvig, bounded to the north by Harboøre Tange and to the south and east by a very pronounced slope. The area is marine foreland, and the slope is a former coastal cliff.

The landscape in the area is characterized by the significant sea level changes after the melting of the Weichsel ice sheet. The sea has retreated when land uplift has been faster than sea level rise - and vice versa. The area was landlocked with England during the Continental Age.

During the Atlantic period, the last large ice sheets in North America melted, and sea levels rose sharply. In the Engbjerg area, the water level was about 2 m higher than today, and the sea flooded the low-lying parts of the area. The striking slope, which rises up to 20-30 m above the low-lying areas, was thus a coastal cliff.

The area is part of NGI 76 and NK 80. The area is important for resting and breeding birds and the areas east of Harboøre have been designated as Natura 2000 bird protection areas and as Ramsar areas.
