Gjellerodde

Gjellerodde is a coastal area located north of Lemvig. It is a well-developed, mature foreland with a beach lake and sea walls.

The area contains impressive examples of sea walls, which clearly illustrate the gradual development of the fjords. In the sea wall complexes there are several closed coastal lakes, of which Gjeller Sø is by far the largest. In the southeastern corner of the area, the development of the fjord continues today with the emergence of a curved headland. The development of this curved headland is in the process of closing off new coastal lakes.

Gjellerodde is a very illustrative example of promontory formation and coastal development, as well as of the coastal type angular foreland. It is therefore important that the coastal formation processes are not disturbed by human intervention. The area belongs to the coastal type angular foreland which is also described for the site Venø – Nørskov Vig .

The area is included in NGI 75 and is also designated as a national coastal landscape. Gjellerodde is designated as a Natura 2000 bird protection area and Ramsar site. The southeastern corner is also designated as a Natura 2000 habitat area.
