Breinholt Arch
Minor marginal moraine and meltwater plain
The Breinholt arch covers an area of approximately 2x2 km immediately north of Struer. To the east, the area is bounded by Venø Sund.
The low hill range of the Breiholt arch consists of a series of gentle hills. The hills are up to 46 meters high, the highest of which have ancient mounds on top. The hill range has clayey soil and is generally oriented southeast-northwest.
To the northeast, the landscape slopes smoothly from the top of the hill down towards Venø Sund. Venø Sund east of the site can be seen as an inner depression to, among other things, Breinholtbuen. This northeastern flank is cut through by a number of small valleys, some of which are water-bearing.
To the southwest the terrain slopes rapidly down to about 25 m above sea level, to a flat surface consisting of meltwater sand and with a slight slope away from the hill strip. Towards Venø Bugt there is a fossil coastal cliff and a smaller area with postglacial deposits. A smaller cliff profile in the northern part of the site shows a massive grey stony till overlain by meltwater sand.
The area is protected by the general protections, including in particular the Nature Conservation Act §3 (protected habitat types) and the beach protection line. An area around Humlum Church and the ancient mounds is protected.
