Bjørndal limestone quarry
Abandoned limestone quarry
Bjørndal limestone quarry is located approximately 1 km north of Uglev on Thyholm and is located on the top of Uglev Salthorsten with a terrain height of 30 m. The limestone surface lies under a thin moraine cover.
The high-lying limestone forms a domed landscape that, together with the low-lying limestone at the coastal cliff Odby Klint, clearly demonstrates the effect of a suspended salt structure. Despite several glacial overruns with consequent erosion, the central part rises just under 30 meters above the visible limestone in the outer area at Odby Klint.
There have actually been four lime quarries in the area, but this is the last one that has been in operation, extracting lime as a building material until 1942 and agricultural lime until 1957. It is known that lime has been extracted at the site since the beginning of the 18th century, when farmers limed the fallow fields that were otherwise not fertilized. With the agricultural drilling reforms, the extraction of agricultural lime was greatly increased.
The large amount of flint that was left over from the lime quarrying was widely used by the local population as a base stone for farm buildings, as a base for middens, and as dikes around fields and gardens.
